Map vs GPS

Why we need to be clear on which you need to get from A to B.

Two different tools to help you get where you're wanting to go: A map and a GPS. Sometimes lumped together in the same bucket - but offer very different things.

A map shows you options. Theoretically, a map can show you every possible route to get from A to B. Maps can be immensely useful if you're looking to understand the different routes to get to your desired destination.

A GPS guides you - turn-by-turn. Yes, a GPS can re-route you as the situation on the ground changes - but largely it will get you from A to B on a singular route. A GPS is an amazing tool if you're mostly focused on optimizing the route to the end goal.

Sometimes you need a map. "Show me all the options".

Sometimes you just need a GPS. "Guide me turn-by-turn".

It may be that you need a map, but you only have a GPS. Perhaps you need GPS-style guidance, but you're looking at a map. Or, more likely, what you need will change during the different stages of your project, your career, or your life.

Step back and think about what you need. Then go make sure you've got the right tools in place.

Thanks for spending time with me in my workshop,
