The Office is OK

Why “the office” is a form of flexibility.

It's been said before (by people much smarter and better-informed than me): The future of work is flexible.

Some people work best in a home office.

Others prefer the kitchen table.

Others prefer sitting outside - at home or even at a park.

Others may be most productive in a public place like a coffee shop.

Still others may work from the couch in their living room.

Or, more likely, the "workplace" will migrate across multiple locations throughout any given week.

But if flexibility is about finding how you work best - it's important to note that, for some, that "best" place may actually a traditional office.

I'm sharing this post because I've noticed a trend in recent conversations that when people talk about working from a traditional office, it's generally said in a somewhat apologetic tone. Something to the tune of "I like the office, so I might go in only 2 days per week. We'll see." It's a hypothetical statement, but note "might", "only", and the added "We'll see".

I'm not saying you should go into the office. Many of us have found new, different, (and dare I say) exciting ways of working over the past two years.

What I am saying is that you should work where and how you prefer.

If the answer is "the office" - you should know that the office is ok. No need to apologize.

Thanks for spending time with me in my workshop,

Eric
